Sibiu - Surprisingly German

by - August 2 2010

I spent this morning exploring Sibiu before taking the train to Sighisoara in the afternoon.

Sibiu was settled by Germans and do the town feels very much like it could be in Germany. The architecture looks German, the food is German, the people look quite German, and even some of the signs are in German. Towns like this remind one that cultural borders are not always well aligned with national Borders.

Sibiu was European cultural capital in 2007 and so the whole town centre was restored in 2006. The result is that the town is so clean and blemish-free that it feels like it could be a Las Vegas reconstruction of itself.

As with everywhere I have been do far, it has a beautiful pedestrianised downtown with more fountains, cafes, and statues that one could ever need.
