Lower Omo Wildlife

by - October 5 2010

One advantage of travelling through the Lower Omo at around dawn is that we got to see some of the wildlife that inhabits the area. We saw Dik Diks (minature deer that are so cute you want to take them all home with you), African Wild Hunting Dogs, Baboons, Hartebeests, Antelope, and many birds.

One element of the wildlife that we didn't appreciate was the Tsetse flies. These are annoying little buggers. When they bite you it really hurts (I was bitten twice) and when you kill one it squirts an astonishingly large amount of blood everywhere, making a horrible mess (they are much bigger than Mosquitos and suck up much more blood). To cap it all, they can also give you sleeping sickness.
